Aseem Trivedi – Cartoonists Against Corruption

Aseem Trivedi (born 17 February 1987) is a controversial Indian political cartoonist and activist, best known for his anti corruption campaign Cartoons Against Corruption. He is a founder member of Save Your Voice, a movement against internet censorship in India.[3] He has been awarded the Courage in Editorial Cartooning Award for 2012 by Cartoonists Rights Network International.

Early life

Aseem Trivedi was born in Shuklaganj, District Unnao , near Kanpur. He started his career as a freelance cartoonist and worked for several Hindi language newspapers and magazines.

Cartoons Against Corruption

In 2011, a nation wide anti corruption movement India Against Corruption gathered pace in the leadership of a veteran Gandhian Anna Hazare demanding Jan Lokpal Bill. Aseem Trivedi joined the crusade and started a cartoon based campaign, Cartoons Against Corruption to support the movement with his art. He launched a website www.cartoonsagainstcorruption.com consisting of his sharp anti corruption cartoons targeting corrupt system and the politicos. He displayed his cartoons in the MMRDA ground, Mumbai during the hunger strike of Anna Hazare.

Ban on the website

Aseem Trivedi was exhibiting his political cartoons from Cartoons Against Corruption in the anti-corruption protest at the MMRDA grounds, when his website was suspended by Crime Branch, Mumbai. It was only 27 December 2011, the first day of the protest, when he received an email from BigRock, the domain name registrar with which his website was registered, saying, “We have received a complaint from Crime Branch, Mumbai against domain name ‘cartoonsagainstcorruption.com’ for displaying objectionable pictures and texts related to flag and emblem of India. Hence we have suspended the domain name and its associated services.”

The site was suspended after a complaint to the Mumbai Crime Branch by a Mumbai-based advocate and congress leader, R.P. Pandey. The complaint stated that “defamatory and derogatory cartoons” were displayed as posters during Mr. Hazare’s hunger strike in Mumbai. Noting that the posters were created by Aseem Trivedi and “are believed to be made at the instance of Shri Anna Hazare,” the complaint requested “strict legal action in the matter.” Following his website’s ban, he lost no time in uploading all the cartoons to a blog he quickly created.

Debate in the Parliament

His cartoons also provoked Rashtriya Janata Dal lawmaker, Ram Kripal Yadav, to initiate a discussion in the Rajya Sabha, labeling the cartoons as an “insult to the Indian Parliament.” RJD MP Ram Kripal Yadav raised the issue in the upper house of the Parliament on the same day, when Rajniti Prasad, another MP of his own party, tore the Lokpal Bill copy in the same house.

Debates initiated over freedom of expression in India

The ban on the website initiated a hot debate over freedom of expression in India. Reporters Without Borders wrote in their report about India,”The national security policy of the world’s largest democracy is undermining online freedom of expression and Internet users’ privacy. The authorities have already clamped down on several mainly file-sharing and streaming websites without any ruling on the illegality of such actions. Anti-corruption cartoonist Aseem Trivedi saw his website, “Cartoons Against Corruption,” which features humorous anti-corruption drawings suspended by his hosting company in late 2011.”[10] Committee to Protect Journalists wrote in their report,”The case of a cartoonist charged with treason and offending India’s national sentiments reflects a growing debate over what constitutes freedom of expression in India.”

Fight against internet censorship

After the ban on his website, Aseem Trivedi along with his friend Alok Dixit started Save Your Voice, a campaign for internet freedom. Save Your Voice soon earned mass support and became a public movement. Through the creative protests in several cities, Save Your Voice, initiated a debate over internet freedom in India. ‘Save your voice’ campaign went viral. There were Facebook pages and posts and a cheeky ‘wish Kapil Sibal day’ on April 1, on All Fools Day, to draw attention to the stand of the Union Information Technology minister against allegedly objectionable content on the internet.

The campaign was targeted at the draconian rules framed under the Information Technology Act, 2000. It received an unexpected fillip with the arrest of Kolkata professor Ambikesh Mahapatra in April 2012 for emailing a cartoon that poked fun at West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to members of the cooperative housing society he was the secretary of. The arrest drew widespread opprobrium from all quarters. Protests against the arrests followed and spawned another rash of cartoons poking fun at the West Bengal Chief Minister’s sense of humour. A cartoon academy in Kerala even hosted an online cartoon exhibition as a mark of protest.[8]
Team Save Your Voice, comprising writers, artists and musicians, organised a protest and sat inside cages set up at Jantar Mantar with the slogan ‘Freedom in the Cage’, symbolising how the IT Rules ‘caged’ the freedom of the people granted by the Constitution.

Hunger Strike

Aseem Trivedi began Freedom Fast, an indefinite hunger strike for internet freedom, along with journalist Alok Dixit at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi. The motive of the hunger strike was to request political parties to support the annulment motion against the Intermediary Guideline Rules of the Information Technology Act 2011 of India. Foreign Policy considers this fast as the ‘most colorful highlights’ from the internet freedom movement in India.

Rebecca Mackinnon writes, “A lively national Internet freedom movement has grown rapidly across India since the beginning of this year. The most colorful highlight so far was a seven-day Gandhian hunger strike, otherwise known as a “freedom fast ,” held in early May on a New Delhi sidewalk by political cartoonist Aseem Trivedi and activist-journalist Alok Dixit.” [14]Reporters Without Borders criticized Indian Government in their press release saying, “Two of the movement’s campaigners, the cartoonist Aseem Trivedi and the citizen journalist Alok Dixit, were forced today to end a hunger strike they began on 2 May. Their health had deteriorated considerably and they were hospitalized.”

Controversy

The cartoons in the controversy parody India’s national symbols, and are drawn to make a point on corruption in the government. One cartoon depicts the Indian Parliament building as a toilet. At the right end of the cartoon, a little above the halfway line, there is a roller with toilet paper. To the left, there is a pink flush, attached to a commode below with three flies hovering over it. The commode looks like the Indian Parliament. ‘National Toilet,’ says the cartoon’s title, with this line beneath the sketch: ‘Isme istamal hone wale toilet paper ko ballot paper bhi kehte hain’ (the toilet paper used here is also called Ballot paper).

Another offending cartoon redraws India’s national emblem of the four Sarnath lions of King Asoka that sit above the motto “Satyameva Jayate” (truth alone shall triumph) as bloodthirsty wolves underscored with the motto “Bhrashtamev Jayate” (long live corruption). And yet another features the “Mother India,” wearing a tri-color sari, about to be raped by a character labeled “Corruption.” The title of the cartoon is “Gang Rape of Mother India.” Another cartoon shows politics and corruption in a sexual position to expose their immoral relationship. The line beneath the cartoon reads, “The immoral relationships are always harmful for a house hold.”
The Cartoonists Rights Network International urged the authorities in the world’s largest democracy to stand up for free speech and put an end to all the attempts to silence Aseem’s political speech. Dr. Robert Russell, Executive Director of CRNI, commented, “Aseem’s enemies either don’t know how to interpret symbols in editorial cartoons or are knowingly twisting the law to silence dissent in order to shield corrupt officials.”

Charges and allegations

He faced the serious allegations of insulting national emblem, Parliament, flag and constitution through his anti corruption cartoons. In January 2012, a case of treason (section 124 A of the Indian Penal Code) was filed against him in Beed District Court, Maharashtra. Additional charges were brought against him by the Maharashtra Police in Mumbai for insulting India’s national symbols, under the State Emblem of India (Prohibition of Improper Use) Act 2005. If found guilty of publishing cartoons in violation of this penal code Trivedi can face up to two years in prison and a fine of up to 5,000 rupees (approx. $100). Banning cartoons and harassing cartoonists, though rare, is not unheard of in India. In 1987, in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, the editor of a weekly magazine was arrested and sentenced to three months of rigorous imprisonment for publishing a cartoon mocking politicians, according to a 2003 account in Frontline magazine. The ensuing furor from the media community saw him released within a few days.

Jail

He was arrested in Mumbai on 9 September 2012 on charges of sedition, related to the content of his work.[19] 10 September 2012, Chairman Justice Markandey Katju of the Press Council of India, who is also a former Judge of Supreme Court of India defended Aseem Trivedi saying that “he did nothing illegal” and in a statement, he maintained that arresting a cartoonist or any other person who has not committed a crime, is itself a crime under the Indian Penal Code (IPC), as it is a wrongful arrest and wrongful confinement.

Mr Trivedi has said that he would not apply for bail till sedition charges against him are dropped. His bail was granted with a personal bond of Rs. 5000 on the basis of an independent petition by a lawyer, who also asked the court to remove the accusations of sedition and the case is still pending in a local court, as of September 2012.

Awards

He has been announced as the 2012 recipient of the “Courage in Editorial Cartooning Award” of Virginia based Cartoonists Rights Network International. He is sharing the award with Syrian cartoonist Ali Ferzat, who was abducted and badly beaten in August, 2011 amid the Syrian regime’s crackdown. Ali Ferzat is in the Time magazine’s list of the 100 Most Influential People in the World. Aseem has been selected for the award for launching the Cartoons Against Corruption website, in an effort to mobilize his fellow citizens against India’s pervasive political corruption and after being charged with treason and insulting national symbols, taking a leadership role in India’s emerging free speech movement and launching a freedom of expression campaign called Save Your Voice: A Movement Against Web Censorship. The honor is presented to a “cartoonist in great danger or who has demonstrated exceptional courage in the exercise of free-speech rights”.

How we know her : Sapna is a celebrity hair stylist. Her celebrity clientele includes the likes of Dhoni, Virat Kohli, Siddharth Malaya and John Abraham

When she’s not experimenting with daring hairstyles on celebrity tresses at either of her two kitschy salons, she’s playing producer, director, writer, photographer, DJ or an actress. She’s managed to backpack around Mexico, road trip around the United States, motorbike up to Ladakh, snag a double major in management, get married and divorced twice, run her own business, rack up a glitzy client list, publish a book called “Style-o-wot,” produce and star in a music video with a Mumbai indie band and become a keystone in the Mumbai urban scene. Sapna’s salon is a second home to bollywood celebrities like Sameera and Sushma Reddy, Dino Morea, Koena Mitra, John Abraham and Bipasha Basu. Sapna has acted in movies like Pyar Ke Side Effects and Ugli Aur Pagli.
Slate of Mind: Sapna Bhavnani
Sapna shares her last minute feelings before entering the Bigg Boss’s den
I am going to fill some shades of black in my co-contestant’s lives

The most quirky celebrity hair stylist, Sapna Bhavnani is absolutely unaware of the fact what a reality show is like
• People are going to see me in a very different hair-style inside the house
• My biggest inspiration to take up any challenge, including Bigg Boss has been M.S.Dhoni
• I am taking along a Bag-full of exciting black clothes
• I will miss writing tweeting the most
• When i come out, i’ll finish my script and hopefully add the Bigg Boss twist in it
It’s not difficult to miss spotting Sapna Bhavnani on the streets of Bombay. Who else can pull off peroxide blonde, magenta red or peacock blue hair teamed with an androgynous, punk, bohemian and often rebellious sense of dressing with such unparalleled élan? However this hair stylist hippie in an urban setting has donned several hats of being a banker, waitress, fashion designer, stylist, producer, director, dj, writer…well the list goes on.I interview the charming and utterly gorgeous lady about her myriad passions whilst stalking her for hours with a camera at her quirky and kitsch salon ‘Mad-O-Wot’ (video attached at the end!).

1) Let’s go back to the start. You went to Chicago, USA to pursue double majors in Marketing and Communication and a minor in Public Speaking, but there began your stint as a self taught hair stylist and fashion stylist. Do you think those years acted as a catalyst in shaping the person that you are today?
- I trace my roots all the way back to my childhood. When I was 14 I was riding a motorcycle and wearing tiny little skirts! This is way back in the 80’s; such behavior from a girl was not expected then in India. However America was liberating because they didn’t live in a box, trying to simply please the ones around. All my years there were spent exploring different avenues. No one judged.

2) How did ‘Sapna Bhavnani – The hair stylist’ come into being?
- That was only recently in 2002, when I moved back to India. I was taken aback by the poor standards of fashion styling then and was definite that I didn’t want to continue styling in such a scenario. Hair styling seemed like the second best thing I loved doing and there began Mad-O-Wot.

3) Mad-O-Wot took many by surprise with its avant-garde decor which was way ahead of its time. You started the trend of salons not adhering to cliqued interiors and staff not wearing a uniform. What was the idea behind this conception?
- When in America I had designed a 16,000sq.ft night club, so designing my salon came naturally to me. I knew I did not want my salon to look like the other typical salons, but as an extension of who I am. That explains the unusual name ‘Mad-O-Wot’, as also my website. People often forget that a salon in many ways is art. If your background is corporate, you are stifling creativity. How can you expect your staff to wear a uniform, be someone they are not, and then ask your client to have an individual identity!

4) While you were creating waves in the industry with a celebrity clientele, you went ahead to start Mad-O-Wat Productions. What prompted you to start this venture?
- I loved hair, makeup and drama ofcourse to realize that the only progression from a salon would be wardrobe and film. Thus began Mad-O-Wot Productions. In fact I am going to be launching Mad-O-Wot Productions in a big way soon on MTV Roots and this project is going to be simply massive, taking Mad-O-Wot Productions to a whole new level.

5) With Raat for Airport and then videos for Kailash Kher, you have established yourself as a producer and director. How do you fit into these moulds?
- Being a producer is fantastic for me because I anyway head a team of twenty-some and am used to efficiently delegating work to motivate them to work as a team. I love juggling work too, everything that a producer needs to be. However, in future I might not produce and direct simultaneously, as it is rather overworking and in many ways contradictory.

6) You started writing a column for Mid-Day and soon had a wide reader base of all age groups. Today you share your thoughts with your blog Bombay Ki Raani. Who is Sapna as a writer?
- On a daily basis I still get 6-8 mails about those columns till date! When I write, it’s me in all my honesty. I have at times tried to run away and write but I simply cannot. I have to be in my environment, in chaos, to be able to write well. Writing in a calm and serene place by the sea would be cheating the real me.

7) You recently launched your clothing line SoFake with your partner Sukriti and will debuting at Lakme Fashion Week. How did this line take birth?
- Sukriti is an old client with brilliant styling sensibilities. While I was always into designing, I am not good with the technical bit of cutting and tailoring. That is where Sukriti comes in the picture. We have a great wavelength and share the same vision. SoFake is the brainchild of our two minds. With the debut show at Lakme Fashion Week, I am going to be paying homage to British Raj and the dance form Kathakali, which I was greatly inspired by on my recent visit to Kerala. It’s going to be a tough ride!

8) A hairstylist, fashion designer, fashion stylist, producer, writer, director, blogger….what is Sapna Bhavnani going to explore next?
- I am working on a script and will eventually work on a Bollywood film that focuses on hair, makeup, costume, drama and story. I want to bring a bit of Tim Burton to India. Also music is another passion that I want to pursue seriously. I have started learning the bass guitar and will hopefully master it soon!
Watch the video to see Sapna Bhavnani – unedited and unapologetic!

Slate of Mind: Urvashi Dholakia

Urvashi shares her last minute feelings before entering the Bigg Boss’s den
My two boys were the happiest when i said i am going to the Bigg Boss’ House

Urvashi was sounding absolutely estatic and charged-up for her second-innings on television and spoke her mind out, notwithstanding the sore throat…
• I am going to have lots and lots of fun inside the Bigg Boss house, I am excited already
• I don’t think I need any mental preparation to go inside the house, I’ll leave that for others who will have to bear with me
• I will miss my twins the most, but i am acrrying my father’s picture with me as he is no more
• Being a Gujju, it’s the ‘Alag Che’ punchline that made me excited about the show
• My mother will be happy for three months as there will be no credit card bills and long telephone bills to be paid.

Sampat Pal Devi – Leader of Gulabi Gang

Sampat Devi Pal (born 1947 in Dhangar family) is the founder and leader of a group of women vigilantes in India’s northern Uttar Pradesh state’s Banda District, called the “gulabi gang” or “pink gang”—so named because many of them wear a uniform of a pink sari.

Although child marriage is illegal in India, she was married at the age of twelve, she tells in her book, Moi, Sampat Pal, chef de gang en sari rose (I, Sampat Pal, gang leader in a pink sari), published by Oh! editions in France in October 2008.

Devi is the wife of an ice cream vendor, a mother of five children and a former government health worker.

The Gulabi gang (from Hindi gulabi, “Rose”, transln. “Rose gang”) is a group of women vigilantes and activists originally from Chitrakoot in Bundelkhand district, Uttar Pradesh, India, but reported to be active across North India as of 2010.

The gang was founded in 2006 by Sampat Pal Devi, a mother of five and former government health worker (and a former child bride), as a response to widespread domestic abuse and other violence against women. Gulabis visit abusive husbands and beat them up with laathis (bamboo sticks) unless they stop abusing their wives. In 2008, they stormed an electricity office in Banda district and forced officials to turn back the power they had cut in order to extract bribes. They have also stopped child marriages and protested dowry and female illiteracy.

The group, which the Indian media portray positively, was reported to have 20,000 members as of 2008, as well as a chapter in Paris, France

Inspiration to movies

A movie called “Pink Saris” has been made about them, directed by Kim Longinotto and premiering at the Toronto Film Festival in 2010.[5] A documentary called “Gulabi Gang”, directed by Nishtha Jain, premiered at the Norwegian Short Film Festival in 2012, where it was awarded the prize for best Norwegian documentary. A movie by the name of Gulab Gang is also in the process of being made, starring Madhuri Dixit in the leading role. Producer Anubhav Sinha has plans to get it released on International Women’s Day, March 8, 2013.

She is likely to share the house of controversy with the likes of Urvashi Dholakia of popular TV show Kausauti Zindagi ki, Asha Goradia of TV show Lagi Tujshe Lagan, former cricketer and BJP MP Navjot Singh Sidhu, Faisla Khan- brother of Aamir Khan and model Sayali Bhagat.

Sampatlanded in Mumbai on Thursday and talking to HT on telephone said, “even as the Bollywood superstar Salman Khan will entertain the gossip lovers in the show, I would like to raise the issues related with women”. “I have been fighting for the rights of the women in Bundelkhand region and my message was limited to Uttar Pradesh Sampat said and added “I was looking for bigger platform where the women across the country know about the movement launched by the Gulabi Sena, hope that the house of Big Boss would give me that opportunity”.
Gulabi gang leader Sampat Pal

“Though I will stay with the strangers in the house still I will deal with them coolly. It’s an opening to make the people feel my strength and share the experience”, she said.

The Big Boss crew visited Badausha- the native village of Sampat and remained there for 10 days to shoot the activities of Gulabi Gang and her daily chores.

In 2008 Sampat went to France and in 2009 she visited Italy to precipitate in the programme organized by the feminine organizations. Around half a dozen books and documentary have been published and prepared on her life and struggle. No doubt today the number of members of gulabi gang is 1.90 lakh and still swelling.

Sampat contested the 2012 assembly election on Congress ticket from Manikpur assembly seat. Though she lost the election yet she won the accolade of the Congress general secretary, Rahul Gandhi for mobilizing the poor masses to support Congress in the Bundelkhand region.

This Bundela lady has been raising voice against the atrocities on women since 1980. Sampat was married with Munni Lal Pal when she was 12 years old. “At the early age I decided that I would become self-reliant and started stitching garments for the village women and girls. I managed to save some money and purchased a sewing machine. Soon I opened a training center for the poor girls and helped them to become self-reliant. The villagers used to tease me. My husband tried to bully me but I remained unmoved and continued on the mission”, she said.

Navjot Singh Sidhu – Former cricketer and BJP MP

Navjot Singh Sidhu (Punjabi: born 20 October 1963) is former Indian cricketer. After retirement from cricket Navjot Singh Sidhu took up television commentary, and politics. He was later forced to resign from his political position because he was convicted of homicide, but he won the by-election for his seat once he was cleared of the charges. He is 1st contestant to enter Big Boss season 6.

Cricketing career

Navjot Singh Sidhu had a volatile career as a cricketer from 1983 to 1999. He made an uneventful international debut against the West Indies at Ahmedabad in 1983 scoring just 19 runs in his debut Test match. He was given another chance in that series but failed again. He was selected for the 1987 Cricket World Cup in India scoring 73 on his One Day International debut in a losing effort against Australia. He scored 50s in four of the 5 World Cup 1987 matches in which he batted, failing in the semifinal against England. His first ODI century came against Pakistan in Sharjah in 1989 while his 134 against England at Gwalior in 1993 was his highest ODI score and the innings which he called his best when he retired in 1999. Sidhu told in an interview that an article criticising his dismal performance changed his cricketing life. After a pathetic performance in 1983, Rajan Bala, a noted cricket columnist, wrote an article on him titled “Sidhu: The Strokeless Wonder” in Indian Express. It was an epiphany that changed his life and he started taking his cricketing career seriously. After his wonderful performance in 1987 world cup, the same columnist wrote an article titled “Sidhu: From Strokeless Wonder To A Palm-Grove Hitter”, applauding his performance.

He scored over 500 Test runs in a year thrice (1993, 1994 and 1997). His only Test double century came during India’s 1997 tour of West Indies. In 1994, he scored 884 ODI runs. Sidhu was the first Indian batsman to score more than 5 centuries in one day international.

Sidhu’s finest moment in Tests was his 201 against West Indies in 1996-97, a defiant knock lasting 11 hours. Known for his tendency to attack spinners, he cracked eight sixes in 124 against Sri Lanka in 1993-94, and four fifties in five innings against the Australians in 1997-98, deliberately singling out Shane Warne.

He announced his retirement from all forms of cricket in December 1999. He played over 50 Test matches and over 100 ODIs scoring over 7,000 international runs. He has 27 centuries to his credit in an 18-year career.

Some of the nicknames he earned were “Sixer Sidhu” for his prolific batting performances and “Jonty Singh” with respect to his improved fielding in his late career, Jonty Rhodes being the best fielder at that time.

Commentator and Television career

Sidhu started his career as a commentator for Nimbus sport when India toured Sri Lanka in 2001. He however later became a commentator with ESPN Star Sports. As a commentator, Sidhu was noted for his one-liners, which came to be known as “Sidhuisms”. After he was sacked from ESPN-Star for swearing on air, he worked for Ten Sports. He also regularly appears as a “cricket analyst” on various Indian news channels and is noted for being possibly the most hated and ridiculed figure in international commentary today.

He also figured as a judge on the television programme – “The Great Indian Laughter Challenge.” He also appeared in other similar programmes as “Funjabi Chak De.”
Parody
Cyrus Sahukar hosts a program on MTV “Piddhu the Great” where he is disguised as Piddhu, a lookalike of Sidhu. The one-liners in the program, similar to Sidhuisms, are called “Pidhuisms.”

Politics

Sidhu won on a Bharatiya Janata Party ticket from the Amritsar seat in the Indian general elections, 2004. After resigning due to a court case against him, he stood again after the ruling was stayed. He won a by-election with a good majority. In the 2009 general elections, he kept the Amritsar seat defeating Om Prakash Soni of INC by 6858 votes.

Conviction for Homicide

On 27 December 1988 at 2.40 pm Navjot Sidhu was involved in an argument regarding his car being overtaken by Gurnam Singh. Sidhu pulled him out of his car and assaulted him. Later Sidhu fled from the spot. The victim Gurnam Singh was taken to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead. The incident was seen by several eyewitnesses.

Sidhu was immediately arrested after the incident and spent several days lodged in a Patiala jail. It was reported that Sidhu had an accomplice who helped him in the murder of Gurnam Singh, the name of the accomplice was Bhupinder Singh Sandhu. However Sidhu vehemently denied all charges against him.

Sidhu claimed in court that he was innocent and “falsely involved in this case by the complainant party”. Jaswinder Singh – the nephew of the victim Gurnam Singh – was an eyewitness to the incident. He said that he was a witness to Sidhu’s crime and was ready to testify in the Supreme Court of India.

In December 2006, Sidhu was found guilty and sentenced to a three-year prison term for culpable homicide following a road rage incident. Sidhu had allegedly assaulted a man in 1988 over a petty dispute over parking vehicles in Patiala. The victim, a 65-year old man named Gurnam Singh, subsequently succumbed to the injuries that were inflicted on him. Sidhu resigned as a Member of Parliament after the court decision and in January 2007 appealed to the Supreme Court.

The murder of Gurnam Singh by Navjot Sidhu and his subsequent conviction created a political controversy because he was a member of Parliament of India at that time. He was supported by the BJP party. On the other hand BJP had previously criticized Congress Party for supporting Shibu Soren who was also a Member of Parliament and was also convicted of murder. Therefore Sidhu was forced to resign from Parliament.[10] The Court stayed his conviction and sentence allowing him to contest and win the Amritsar Lok Sabha seat in February 2007.
